Understanding VA Aid and Attendance Benefits

This initiative serves as a crucial lifeline for those who have dedicated their lives to serving our nation and the loved ones who selflessly care for them.
The VA Aid and Attendance and Housebound benefits are special programs designed to provide additional financial support to qualified veterans and their survivors. These programs offer monthly payments that are added to the regular VA pension, ensuring that those who need assistance with daily activities or are confined to their homes due to illness can live with dignity and financial security.
Am I Eligible for VA Aid and Attendance or Housebound Benefits?
To determine your eligibility for these essential benefits, you must meet specific requirements. Below are the eligibility criteria for both programs:
VA Aid and Attendance Eligibility: To qualify for VA Aid and Attendance, you must be a recipient of a VA pension and meet at least one of the following conditions:
- You require assistance from another person for daily activities such as bathing, feeding, and dressing.
- You are primarily bedridden due to an illness.
- You reside in a nursing home due to mental or physical disabilities related to a disability.
- Your eyesight is limited, even with glasses or contact lenses, with a visual field of 5 degrees or less.
Housebound Benefits Eligibility: To be eligible for Housebound benefits, you must receive a VA pension and spend most of your time at home due to a permanent disability that does not improve.
It's important to note that you cannot receive Aid and Attendance benefits and Housebound benefits simultaneously.
How to Apply for VA Aid and Attendance or Housebound Benefits
If you believe you meet the eligibility criteria for either of these programs, you can apply through one of the following methods:
- Send a complete VA form to your pension management center (PMC): Fill out VA Form 21-2680 (Examination for Housebound Status or Permanent Need for Regular Aid and Attendance) and mail it to the PMC in your state. You can also have your doctor fill out the examination information section. You may need to provide additional evidence, such as a doctor's report, to support your need for Aid and Attendance or Housebound care. Include details about your daily activities and how your disability affects your ability to perform them.
- Apply in Person: Visit your nearest VA regional office and bring all the necessary information and documentation for a face-to-face application.
In the case of veterans residing in nursing homes, an additional form, the Request for Nursing Home Information in Connection with Claim for Aid and Attendance (VA Form 21-0779), must be filled out.
