Fraud Alert: Watch Out for Scam Calls!

Recently, there have been more reports of scam calls targeting older adults, some pretending to be from Eldercare Locator. The Eldercare locater also links people to AgeSmart.  This is a trusted service that connects older adults and people with disabilities to local resources. Lately, they've noticed an increase in scam calls, where callers may:

  1. Pretend to be from "Eldercare," "Eldercare Locator," "Social Security," or "Medicare."
  2. Ask for personal info like your Social Security number, bank details, or Medicare number, and even threaten you with jail or fines.
  3. Harass you with repeated calls from the same number.

Here's what you need to know to stay safe:

  1. The government won't call you out of the blue for your Social Security number.
  2. They won't ask for payment via gift cards or wire transfer.
  3. Your Social Security number can't be suspended.

To protect yourself:

  • If you're suspicious about a call, hang up. Find their contact info yourself; don't rely on caller ID. Call or email them directly.
  • Never share your personal info through unsolicited calls, texts, or emails.
  • Avoid paying strangers with gift cards or wire transfers.
  • Don't click on email links or attachments from unknown senders.
  • Sign up for the National Do Not Call Registry.

If you're targeted by scams, call the Department of Justice's National Elder Fraud Hotline at 833-FRAUD-11 (833-372-8311). For any age group, report scams to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at 877-FTC-HELP (877-382-4357) or visit reportfraud.ftc.gov.

If you need help from Eldercare Locator, call 800-677-1116. For assistance with COVID-19 info and essential services, call DIAL at 888-677-1199. Stay safe and informed!
